Data Center & UPS Batteries on the 19-Inch Rack Platform

Data center UPS is mid-transition: lithium has climbed from 10.6% of new capacity in 2020 to 35% in 2025, yet VRLA still holds about half the installed UPS battery base. The driver is arithmetic — lithium UPS batteries run 10–15 years against 3–6 for VRLA, and their total cost of ownership crosses under lead-acid within five years. EMS-ESS supplies the standard block for that conversion: 51.2V 100Ah modules in 19-inch 4U format, sixteen to a cabinet at 81.92 kWh, with SNMP monitoring that drops straight into existing DCIM.

Facility Math

Batteries Are 35–50% of UPS TCO — That Is the Budget to Attack

Across a facility's life, batteries account for 35–50% of total UPS system cost once replacements, labor and disposal are counted. VRLA strings at 80% depth of discharge deliver only 400–600 cycles against 3,000–5,000 for LiFePO4, which is why the replacement treadmill never stops under lead-acid. Lithium's higher unit price pays back within five years, and every year after that is margin — the reason colocation operators now specify lithium by default on new builds.

  • Replacement treadmill — VRLA needs a battery change every 3–6 years; a 10–15 year lithium service window removes two full string replacements from the plan.
  • Cycle-life gap — 400–600 cycles for VRLA at 80% DoD versus 3,000–5,000 for LiFePO4, with 6,000-cycle-rated cells behind our rack modules.
  • Floor space and weight — 5.12 kWh in a standard 4U slot means retrofitting existing racks instead of building new battery rooms.
  • Monitoring expectations — optional SNMP network cards, front LCD and gyroscope anti-theft sensors feed capacity and alarm data straight to the DCIM stack.

19-Inch Rack Module Specification

Modules ship UN 38.3 and CE certified with UL 1973 available as a per-project program for US installs. Communication profiles cover the major UPS platforms, so the battery negotiates with the rectifier bus instead of being wired blind across it.

From the Field

"Two 81.92 kWh cabinets replaced the VRLA strings in our colo UPS room. The SNMP cards report straight into our DCIM, the Vertiv profile worked on first power-up, and for the first time in this facility's history there is no battery replacement on the five-year capital plan."
