Off-grid and emerging markets are electrifying on batteries: 775 million people still live without electricity — about 600 million of them in sub-Saharan Africa — GOGLA members sold a record 10 million off-grid solar kits in 2025, and African battery storage capacity is projected to grow around 700% between 2025 and 2030. Heat, Theft and Payment Discipline — the Three Killers
An off-grid battery works where infrastructure does not, so the failure modes are physical and financial at once. Lead-acid banks fade fast in equatorial heat and disappear from unattended sites; diesel generation, the fallback, costs $0.30–0.60 per kWh wherever fuel logistics reach. And with PAYGo sales growing 54% in the first half of 2025, the battery is now also the payment terminal — it has to enforce contract state reliably for years, in the field, without a technician.
- Heat endurance — packs aged and verified for 45 °C sustained operation, because equatorial roof and wall installations do not cool down at night.
- PAYGo control — remote lock and unlock executed by the BMS with a tamper log, plus SOC reporting over an API the provider's platform can poll.
- Theft economics — a firmware-locked battery that will not charge on a stranger's controller is worth far less stolen, which protects the asset the financier owns.
- Diesel displacement — LFP at 4,000–6,000 cycles undercuts $0.30–0.60/kWh diesel economics across the kit's service life, which is what makes the credit model work.

SHS & Mini-Grid Specification
Two platforms serve the segment: sealed 12V packs for solar home systems with the PAYGo layer in firmware, and 51.2V 100Ah modules for mini-grid and C&I-style emerging-market sites. Both carry IEC 62133-2 under the CB scheme plus UN 38.3 transport testing for recurring container shipments.
